ZOANTHROPE

ZOANTHROPE
INFO
Name: Zoanthrope
Subspecies: Werewolves, werebears, werecats, were-any-carnivore-animal
< isopods >
INFORMATION
Zoanthropes are shapeshifters with an ability to switch between human, beast, and hybrid states; just about any carnivore mammal can be found among them. Werewolves are the most common monster, but one can find weretigers, bears, and the like as well. Zoanthropes have a reputation for savage strength and toughness, with some even capable of regeneration. This power comes at a price; they are often slaves to the moon and the night, and their own tempers can send them into a berserk rage. Zoanthropes are also commonly seen as pack animals, strengthened by their bonds with others and giving them power in turn. Many Revan tales say this bond is one of the few ways Zoanthropes can cling to their last bits of humanity.
MONSTER TRAITS
  • Additional beast-human hybrid form. May double in height and mass. Changing to this form can be either voluntary or involuntary.
  • Additional entirely animal form that can be switched in and out of.
  • Regeneration, can heal minor damage in an hour and major damage overnight if not inflicted by silver.
  • Razor sharp teeth/claws, can tear through metal.
  • Partial animal features outside of hybrid form; changed ears, nose, animal tail, etc
  • Painful Shifting: when activating monster traits the process is agonizing.
  • Extra fur coat in normal form, which can be tufts of fluff, manes, ruffs, or patterns, or uniform fur growth all over form. Colors and patterns found naturally are the most common, but more unusual colors (blue, purple, etc) are not impossible.
  • Increased strength/stamina/speed. Physical abilities grow even stronger at night.
  • Weak to silver, either depowered or burned by it.
  • Can easily become enraged and enter berserk frenzy. The Zoanthrope feels no pain, but also cannot distinguish between friend and foe and is in a constant state of aggression.
  • Transformation during heightened emotions: commonly when experiencing fear, anger, excitement, or grief, may activate traits or switch into hybrid/animal form.
  • Heightened senses. Examples: Can see in the dark, track by scent, hear whispered conversation across the room.
  • Glowing eyes when emotional. May also look clearly inhuman. Alternately, eyes remain distinctly human even when transformed.
  • Bestial Reflection: even when not transformed, mirrors show the Zoanthrope form. May also leave behind animal tracks when walking through mud or snow regardless of feet covering.
  • Pack Mentality/Apex Predator: Desire for a group of people and a sense of order with those people. May want to be leader, second in command, etc. May also see those around as threats to fight or flee, packmates to protect, or prey to hunt.
  • Pack Link: Limited mind speech to those seen as packmates. Can communicate either short sentences, or convey emotions or sensations.
  • Call of the Beast: can impart two temporary Zoanthrope traits onto another person who hears the Zoanthrope howl or is bitten, and willing or closely linked to the Zoanthrope. These changes must be from current Traits and cannot last past moonset.
  • Voracious appetite. Before or after transformation, compelled to eat large meals. May also be driven to eat meat.
  • Moon Strike: Can channel the light and energy of the moon into claws and fangs, delivering powerful, magic infused strikes. With effort and training, can turn slashes into projectiles.
  • Moon Affinity: during Moon Warp, can access all listed Zoanthrope or primary monster traits.

  • INFORMATION
Fearsome beast-human hybrids, closely tied to the night and the moon. Werewolves are seen as powerful, feral monsters, capable of assuming either a hybrid form, or an entirely animal shape. Either way they possess razor sharp fangs, high strength, and many can regenerate from all but the most grievous wounds. Added to the threat is how quickly they can shift between human and beast form; whether that’s from emotional stress, nighttime, or the moon, they are always fierce and strong. Equally dangerous is their tendency to form groups, possibly even with other monsters, and woe to whatever threatens their pack.
    LORE 1:
Werewolves are one of our oldest foes, and one of the most ancient curses. Woe to those corrupted by the moon and the wilds, for those curses bleed into their forms. They become raving beasts, capable only of the hunt and bloodlust. We are only prey to them, and they are lost to our grace. Only silver blades can purify such corruption. -Steel Warden
    LORE 2:
The werebeasts are amongst those most blessed by the moon. They are in-tune with each phase and glow of the moon. They remember the wilds we have forgotten, the thrill of the hunt and the power of the moon's blessing. They are one of the first blessings of the moon, with a long and storied history. Perhaps that is why their forms are amongst the most varied, to show the range of this power. -Silver Tear

  • INFORMATION
Weretigers are often seen as the opposite of Werewolves in many ways, showing just how diverse Zoanthropes can be. (It should also be noted that this is far from the only feline type of Zoanthrope; lions, jaguars, and leopards have been spotted, though tiger seems to be very common.) The tigers tend to abandon pack links and bonds, becoming solitary hunters who hone their strength and supernatural powers. But much like the wolves, tigers are still governed by the moon and night, and many still experience complications with their beast side. Sometimes this is enough to drive Weretigers to seek out packs of their own, though many still opt to stand or fall on their own strength.
    LORE 1:
The Weretiger is a lonely, cursed individual more often than not. This is likely for the best, as they are already formidable creatures alone. If you are unfortunate enough to find a pack of them, it is best to isolate the tigers one at a time and cull them individually. Avoid close combat at all costs, and stick to silver bullets and arrows. -Steel Warden
    LORE 2:
Weretigers are a strange breed full of contradictions; some are solitary, others are pack creatures. They are individuals above all else, reminding us just how varied the Zoanthrope blessing can be. Still, the loners and the introspective seem most favored by the tigers. If you encounter the blessing of the Weretiger, respect their solitude and only give your companionship if it is first asked for. -Silver Tear
